EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- Egypt has formed a military commission to investigate ways to destroy smuggling tunnels under its border with Gaza, a security official said Thursday.

A team of Egyptian engineers, border guards and intelligence officers arrived at the border area early Thursday morning with equipment to demolish the tunnels, a Ma'an correspondent said.

The security official told Ma'an there were over 1,200 tunnels under the border.

In the past, smuggling tunnels have been destroyed by filling them with cement or water or by using explosives.

Food, fuel and building materials are smuggled into Gaza through the tunnels, easing the tight blockade imposed by Israel since 2007.

Hamas ordered the sealing of the tunnels on Sunday after militants killed 16 Egyptian officers in an attack on a police station near the border in Sinai.

"Eighty percent of food materials in the markets of Gaza come from Egypt. What comes from Israel is not enough at all," said tunnel owner Abu Awni.

Long lines built at petrol stations across Gaza on Monday as news broke that the tunnels were blocked. Two days later some pumps had already run dry, even though Palestinians said at least two fuel pipes to Egypt were still functioning.

But Abu Awni predicted that the Egyptians would not be able to close the tunnels for long.

"Unless they create other crossings for trade, we will open five tunnels for each tunnel they close. They can not just leave our people to starve," he said.

An Egyptian military offensive on the Sinai peninsula entered its second day on Thursday after gunman fired shots towards a police station in the main administrative center of North Sinai on Thursday.

Hundreds of troops in armored cars drove out of el-Arish to hunt Islamist militants blamed for Sunday's attack.

Residents in el-Arish welcomed the security sweep, seeing it as an opportunity to curb criminality among Bedouin tribes, including those in Sheikh Zuwaid, who make their living smuggling goods and people through the network of tunnels into Gaza.

"We want the army to return to the border," said 45-year-old shopkeeper Hassan Mohamed. "The tunnels have destroyed the lives of people in el-Arish. We want them to hit the Bedouin hard."

instead of closing the tunnels hamas/egypt should have tunnels with their respective entrances on each end monitored...or hamas can monitor just the Gaza end so that no arms or weapons get through, only needed materials, food and supplies. all else can be turned back or confiscated and perpetrators arrested. closing the tunnels is exactly what izrael wants because they know the siege is killing Gazans.

Tunnels are necessary for the survival of Gazans. Even an animal will dig tunnels if encircled without food and water. Are Gazans worse than animals to be killed without food, medicine and other needs.Open the gates and there will be no tunnels.Man the gates properly to prevent banned item entering or leaving Gaza.

Morsi is another dictator flexing his muscles to appease the west. More Gazans suffer at the hands of egypt. You are a real muslim there Morsi, especially during Ramadan, which is suposed to be the months of mercy and forgiveness.

You will see your fate when you meet your creator. You should start your mansion building in KSA soon, that is going to be your resting place. That is where all the corrupted evil doers go.

Let's be realistic. Tunnels are Gaza's lifeline. Destroy them now and another 1000 will be dug in no time. The best way to make them irrelevant is to open the Rafah crossing for normal business and travel. Along the lines of what Reagan once said to the Russian president, Palestinians say: "Mr. Mursi, tear down the gates!"

ether call the tunnels illegal smuggling routes that undermine egyptian authority and shut them down or just make roads and bring the goods in without hiding

"We will open five tunnels for each tunnel they close". Just make sure that this time you install an EZ Pass system in the new tunnels for rapid flow of goods.

Egyptians are not worried about what goes into Gaza, they would have open roads for that. They are worried about what is coming out of Gaza. And they won't let that out by road or tunnel. It is the support for the Salafi in Sinai. The Brotherhood is a Leninist type organization. They don't like anyone out of their control. Hamas will come around and bow to their masters in Cairo soon enough. Any Salafi who dares operate w/o orders will be chopped up. Totalitarianism is coming to Egypt.

Egypt is full of Salafis and is not in need to recruit Palestinians in Gaza for that! the latest attack on the Egyptian police in Saniai had no Palestinians involved. Egypt knows any opening of borders requires Israeli approval and that is what keeps the borders (publicly closed). prior to 2005 most of guns smuggled to Gaza came from Israel and still there was 3 checkpoints open between Israel and the strip! smuggling arms happens all the time, doesnt need a tunnel that everyone know about.
