Abbas calls for protection of Jerusalem holy sites
Published Tuesday 21/08/2012 (updated) 30/08/2012 16:49
RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas stressed Tuesday the need to protect Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites, speaking on the anniversary of an attempted arson of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Abbas said the fire, which was set by an Australian in 1969, was "the first (attack) in a series that aimed to demolish the Al-Aqsa Mosque to make way to build the (third) temple."

The president's office said in a statement that Israeli excavation work in Jerusalem and tunnels underneath the holy site would not undermine the fact that the city has an Arab identity.

It said there would be no peace and stability without an end to the occupation and settlements in Jerusalem.

Abbas' remarks came at the end of Ramadan, during which thousands of Palestinians visited the mosque in Jerusalem's Old City after Israel unexpectedly eased restrictions.

Israeli officials said they had lowered the age limit for men wanting to visit and had also handed out seven times more permits to Palestinians.

Religious authorities said up to half a million people visited the third holiest site last Tuesday, many of them from the West Bank, as visitors and pilgrims flowed through the checkpoints.

Yes, the Christian and Muslim holy sites should have protection and they DO (and hopefully some day they will all be removed from Jerusalem and all of Israel permanently). Abbas' statement that there will be no peace and stability unless occupation and settlements end is very well-said. He should be damn sure he gets that reply to Shaul Mofaz's invitation to resume "peace" talks [reported by Ma'an News Agency, "Report: In Eid call to Abbas, Mofaz urges talks" (20/8/2012)].

protection for christian and muslim sites..... Ok, I'm confused. I thought Jerusalem was about Israel's holy sites. Granted, while the Temple is not intact any more, Hebrew antiquities were there long before the other two's "shrines" existed. Seems to me that Abbas is confused, or, like others who profess love for the protection of such locations-- is seeking to dismiss, and ignore the great big, humongous elephant in the room. Jerusalem belongs to Israel. Well, actually, it belongs to God.

Why doesnt he mentioned jewish history at the same time? What kind of partner in peace is he when he doesnt even mention jewish holy sites as well.

Abbas is right. The Holy Sites do need protecting, but the biggest threats to the Holies Sites has always been when Muslim militants used them as either: a refuge from Israeli forces, a place to hide weapons from Israeli forces, or a place from which launch attacks at Israeli forces !!!

And so, the Sites need protecting From MUSLIM MILITANTS,
and Abbas' "calls for protection of Jerusalem holy sites"
is like WOLVES calling for PROTECTING THE SHEEP !!!!

This story is most appropriately placed under Maan's "Culture" category.
- "Abbas calls for protection of holy sites", that are NOT threatened, and
- Abbas calls demolition of a few tents/wells "Ethnic Eleansing & Genocide".
