TULKAREM (Ma'an) -- An 85-year-old man from Tulkarem has been convicted of killing his daughter, the public prosecutor said Wednesday.

The man killed his 55-year-old daughter on Aug. 24, 2009 in the home they shared in al-Shweka in the northern West Bank, a statement from the prosecutor's office said.

The convicted man, who was not identified, decided to kill his daughter because he believed she was going to poison him, the court heard.

He waited for her to leave her room on the upper floor of their home, but when she didn't come out, he knocked on her door, he told the court.

The victim opened the door but refused to let her father enter, and they began to fight. He then beat her with a wooden stick until she died, before choking her to make sure she was dead, according to his testimony.

The man then left the house and asked a pedestrian in the street to bury her for 100 shekels ($27), before going to the police station where he confessed to the killing, according to the prosecutor.

The man was initially sentenced to 15 years in prison, but the court reduced the sentence to seven-and-a-half years due to his age, among other reasons, the prosecutor said.
