JERICHO (Ma'an) -- Around 60 people from across the West Bank on Tuesday tried to drive from Jericho to Ramallah on an Israeli-only road to protest Israel's restrictions on Palestinian movement.

Popular resistance committees organized the motorcade of around 50 cars to protest the network of roads in the West Bank designated for the exclusive use of Jewish settlers.

Committee spokesman Bashir Tamimi told Ma'an the protest aimed to send a message that the roads were built on Palestinian land and to protest settler attacks on Palestinians and holy places.

Protesters drove to the Jericho checkpoint with Palestinian flags on their cars, where they were met by dozens of Israeli soldiers who refused to let them pass.

Tamimi said forces detained five people, including a 15-year-old girl.

An Israeli military spokesman said the protesters were "behaving violently." Asked to elaborate, the army official said they were "acting in a manner that they needed to be detained."

Video footage taken by activists shows two people detained for peacefully protesting, and an Israeli soldier trying to confiscate a journalist's camera.

Around 43 percent of the West Bank is off-limits to Palestinians because Israel has allocated it to settlers. Israel has erected over 500 checkpoints and roadblocks in the West Bank, impeding Palestinians' movement in order to ease travel for settlers, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs says.

In 2011, five Palestinians were killed -- including two children -- and 1,000 injured by settlers or security forces in incidents related to the settlements, the UN agency said in a report released Tuesday.

Settlements are illegal under international law.

Racist Jews will pay for their crimes, again.

You should try to be more realistic,
where Palestinians do NOT pay for their crimes (of murdering Jews),
so clearly "racist Jews will NOT pay for their crimes" (of self-defense) !!

And, you should also realize that the only reason that Israeli-only roads
even exist in West Bank is because of Palestinian-only terror on the roads !!

Added to this racist, bigotted shame of Israel,is the fact that MY US tax dollars go to Israel,illegally,p.a.,to pay for these Jewish-white-only apartheid roads on stolen Arab land. That's a disgrace, for Americans, who are supposed to be from the pluralistic 'land of the free...and...brave',who are paying for foreign Israel's racial 'Jews-only' roads!Even apartheid S/Africa gave the native blacks more mobility, than Israel gives native Palestinian Arabs. Ye shall reap as ye sow, foolish Israel.

It is far more of a disgrace for the USA to support a government,
that so clearly supports terror, as a tool to achieve statehood, and
with your own "racist, bigotted" views, you yourself are "a disgrace
for Americans", so please consider moving away from the 'land of the
free and home of the brave', and to the terrorist non-state that you love !!

I wonder if Steve B and Mel have ever been to Israel or Palestine? I've been around the world and can confidently say the vast majority of the time, media coverage is not an accurate description or representation of the facts. I also agree with @ Mel #3. If you are so adversely motivated by these comments, and feel embarrassed to live in the US, you still have the liberty and freedom to choose to live elsewhere. You should exercise that right.

Dear #5, I did move from that "land of the free" to that "terrorist non-state that I LOVE." The only Terror I have ever seen are the settlers beating pregnant women, rocks being thrown at children, burning cars, and racist comments tagged on mosques and schools. Aren't those terrorist actions? These settlers are not innocent they know what they are doing and what they are doing is illegal. Since being here I have learned the Jews do not want peace, they want the Palestinians out or "their" land.

If you do not believe me, take a look at this video. It shows how the Jewish population has no intention of ever allowing Palestine to exist, even though the 1967 line was established. It is sad that the international community does not do enough to prohibit Israel from their continues terrorist behavior. http://video.nytimes.com/video/2011/09/19/world/middleeast/100000001060203/settled-in.html

#5 : If U read my words properly,U'd see that I'm very PROUD of my people/nation America. It's our USGovt I despise, for being anti-American values &principles&betraying Americans! '...disgrace for the USA to support a government, that so clearly supports terror, as a tool to achieve statehood...'? U must mean Israel, yes? Otherwise you're a Zionist Ur'self?Coz Israel is neither 'free','brave' or democratic,so my USGovt shouldn't be allied with it,by ethics, morality or respect for humanity!

What a weirdly ugly 'comment' section this website has! It took me two looks to figure out who was who in the exchanges above.

Catie gets all her proofs about the nature of the Israeli population from a single video, while Mel throws all the generalised calumnies she can at Israel. Neither of them acknowledge the ugliness of the anti-Israeli movement in the Middle East. Both of them can see only evil in Israel, and not the self restraint, democratic debate, the strong public spirit amongs

Sorry to tell you but Chris, but I do not get my "proofs" from one single video. I have actually been in Jerusalem and Palestine for over a year. So my Proofs come from my eyes and experiences. I have dealt with enough of the Israeli population to form a well informed opinion. Israel present itself the way it wants. Come here and see the Truth. Self restraint my (cough) Don't you know anything about settlements????!!! I guess its like that ole saying Ignorance is Bliss!
