Violence flares at Land Day protests

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces fired tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters across the occupied West Bank on Friday, as Palestinians commemorated Land Day and marched toward Jerusalem.

In Bethlehem and Qalandiya, near Ramallah, Palestinian youths threw rocks at Israeli soldiers and military installations connected to checkpoints separating West Bank cities from the holy city Jerusalem.

Palestinians are joining a "Global March to Jerusalem" in addition to the annual Land Day commemoration, which marks a deadly Israeli crackdown on protests in the Galilee in 1976.

Israeli forces were put on high alert at frontier crossings with Lebanon and Syria, but there were no reports of any protesters nearing the fences, unlike last year when several demonstrators were killed there.

However, violence flared at checkpoints in the occupied West Bank to the north and south of Jerusalem. Witnesses also reported disturbances at gates leading into the Old City, with police looking to limit access to the revered al-Aqsa Mosque.

A Ma'an correspondent in East Jerusalem said a Red Crescent supervisor at the scene of clashes reported six injuries, two of them serious. They were injured by a riot policeman's horse, the official said.

"We are determined to march together toward Jerusalem, and hopefully we will break through and reach it," said a masked youth, calling himself Rimawi, as he faced off against soldiers near Ramallah.

Flag-waving crowds neared the Qalandiya crossing out of Ramallah, some of them hurling stones at the security forces, but were forced back when border police sprayed them with foul smelling liquid from a water cannon.

His will for the Present may be as His will in the Past,
“Now also many nations are gathered against thee, that say, Let her be defiled, and let our eye look upon Zion. But they know not the thoughts of the LORD, neither understand they his counsel: for he shall gather them as the sheaves into the floor. Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion: for I will make thine horn iron, and I will make thy hoofs brass: and thou shalt beat in pieces many people".

So where'd the other 925,000 people from the million person global march to Jerusalem disappear to? Were they maybe protesting the ongoing massacre in Syria? Were they maybe protesting the lack of civil rights across the Arab world? I guess most of them realized that if the Arab population in Jerusalem went from 70,000 before 1967 to almost 300,000 under Israeli rule since then - there is clearly no ethnic cleansing by Israel like the GMJ organizers claimed.

"Land Day turned violent Friday when Arabs began hurling Molotov cocktails and stones at soldiers near the Kalandia checkpoint north of Jerusalem, &
Soldiers responded with teargas and deployed the "Skunk" – a vehicle loaded with canons spraying a noxious-smelling liquid. A machine that transmits high frequency sound waves was also employed."

Israeli fire killed one young Palestinian man, and injured over
30 others that were trying TO CROSS IT'S INTERNATIONAL BORDER,
and if Israel had not stopped them, first 3,000 and then 3,000,000
would have followed, in the attempt to destroy the Jewish State !!!!

The smell of survival is the sweetest, even if Palestinians wish to be bloodied, in the process !!

@ Tobias- as someone who has been at demonstrations all over Palestine in the last 1.5 years, i have not once seen a protester use a 'molotov cocktail'; I am not sure where the press gets these ideas. There were certainly no molotov cocktails used yesterday in Qalandia.

Land day was a failure, no big march, no nothing. One more bit of theater, but no one even was watching.
