Israel navy 'opens fire at Gaza fishing boat'

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Israel's navy fired live ammunition at a fishing boat in the Gaza Strip on Monday, witnesses said.

Several shells were fired into open areas off the Gaza coast, locals told Ma'an.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said that a fishing boat had deviated from the designated fishing area, and after failing to respond to orders to return, warning shots were fired.

No hits were identified and the boat returned to the designated fishing area, she added.

Under Israel's maritime blockade, Palestinians are forbidden from fishing more than three nautical miles from the coast.

During the Oslo accords negotiators had agreed on 20 nautical miles of fishing access along Gaza's coastline.

In December, the Al-Mezan Center for Human Rights said Israel has detained 40 fishermen, injured five others and seized nine boats since the start of 2011.

Why do the titles of news stories always make it sound like Israel is in the wrong? The title of this article makes it sound like Israel was trying to provoke a fight when they were in fact merely warning the boat to get out of waters where they were not to be. The title sounds like they shot at the boat to injure which is what I have repeatedly seen them try to refrain from doing as much as possible, ie when they drop warning leaflets in areas where they are going to engage their enemies.

Since this is still Passover, think of Israel as modern version of Pharaoh and the Palestinians as the people living in captivity. They day will come when Israel's armies will be swallowed up by the sea, just a Pharaoh's was.

IF as reported, the "Israel navy opened fire at Gaza fishing boat",
the boats would have been destroyed and the men killed, and firing a
"shot across the bow" in this situation is an accepted naval practice !!!

Only Negotiations, Only Compromise, and
Only A Signed Peace Agreement, with the State Of Israel,
Will Ever Change This Situation, And It Is Time We Face These Facts !!!

Israel is one of the stupid government run country I ever heard off. Shooting fisherman try to make a living from fishing, its not that were catching whales but maybe the fish was a large fish that pull the boat away from the coast. Obviously they can't blame the fish but they will blame the fisherman and shoot them. It did say 20 nautical miles not 3. If the Palestinians are weak and can't defend themeselves, why taking advantage of them?.

Maybe if they didn't shoot fishermen in an area they have illegally closed there wouldn't be these stories. Face it, Israel is stolen land run by terrorists. Those are the facts. most of u here is bored....OCHAoPT (UN) reports describe what isr is doing there, but I know... about what Israel does there one need to talk only well, mainly that they "defend"themselves from civil.boats or not at all.... Read those reports....or perhaps u'll say the same old same old...UN is antisemitic... OMG

wow-ppl here love to whine about isr PR here-well still it wont change what isr is doing there....thank God there are huge amount of UN and not only reports about what is going on there-ppl here would love to censor all the"bad"news-well if u r an illegal occupier and u shoot civilians just trying to survive your criminal blockade-reduction of fishing area- hardly ever there is fish,etc.don't expect fanfare.AIPAC tried to hand me a line by funding a trip to Israel, but have failed to miserably;p

The horror, the horror, Israel gave warning shots to a fishing boat and no one was injured! The horror! Yesterday, 100 Syrians or more were killed, dozens of Yemenis, no one knows how many Malians and Libyans, dozens of Iraqis, all killed by fellow muslims and not a peep on this board. But @2 wants the end of Israel because they fired warning shots at a fishing boat. Typical mentality.

The United Anti Israel Fascists would be a more apt name, that's why so many people are calling for it to be abolished. The bulk of the members are Arab/Muslim countries. It's newsworthy because the blockade of Gaza is illegal under International law. The fact that Israel uses military force to enforce its illegal blockade of Gaza needs to be brought to the attention of the world. Israel's brutal treatment of Palestinians cannot be allowed to continue for much longer.

#13 Perhaps YOU should learn to read. The UN is comprised of approx 192 members, of which by no means are the majority Muslim. The 3 mile blockade imposed by Israel IS illegal under international law, as is the occupation. If Israel is not "an occupier" why is Palestine known worldwide as "The Occupied Territories"? Israel is a member state of the UN, VOLUNTARILY and has frequently and flagrantly ignored its resolutions.

Shirley.. The bulk/ the majority neither of those words describes Muslim membership of the UN. I didn't refer to Palestine as a country and it hardly matters, the Israeli occupation and blockade is still illegal. As is the imprisonment and torture of children, the "administrative detention", the stealing of water sources, the extra judiciary executions, the confiscation of land and property, etc etc.
