Fayyad meets Danish activist injured by soldier
Published Wednesday 18/04/2012 (updated) 20/04/2012 16:28
RAMALAH (Ma'an) -- The prime minister in Ramallah Salam Fayyad on Wednesday met with Andreas Ias, a Danish activist who was injured Saturday by an Israeli officer.

Fayyad condemned the attack and all of Israel's "continuous violations" against foreign activists, including the recent efforts by Israel to prevent over 1,000 visitors from visiting Palestine.

"When we talk about Israeli violations against out people, we won't forget the attack on Andreas, who arrived in solidarity, nor the Israeli and international campaign to play down the attack," Fayyad said.

Fayyad thanked the 20-year-old Danish national and all foreign solidarity activists.

Israel's military, meanwhile, has suspended a senior officer over the incident.

A video showed Lieutenant-Colonel Shalom Eisner holding his M-16 rifle in both hands and shouting at a group of demonstrators taking part in a bicycle rally in the occupied West Bank, before suddenly striking Ias in the face.

Soldiers had stopped a group of around 250 participants near the Jericho village of al-Auja and refused to let them start a cycling tour, which was organized by youth group Sharek and officials from the al-Auja environmental center.

Military spokesman Yoav Mordechai told Army Radio the officer's behavior was unacceptable and he had been suspended following an initial investigation. However, he said the edited video did not reflect the whole story.

"These are harsh pictures, but I still can't divorce the filmed episodes from the incident that lasted over an hour and which included violence by the anarchists and Palestinians, (though) this does not justify what we see."

Ias was treated in a Palestinian hospital for light injuries and said Monday that he was well.

"We were just walking slowly towards the soldiers, we were chanting Palestinian songs calling for the liberation of Palestine. I don't believe that is a provocation," he told Israel's Channel 10 television.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the officer's actions.

The IDF officer has not been suspended but simply transferred to another job for 2 yrs after which he could return on the front line. It therefroe means that he has not been suspended. Israeli's are very crafty in twisting words thus making them look good. THE SOLDIER HAS BEEN SUSPENDED AND NOT KICKED OUT OF THE ARMY.

How keen a reader are you, #2? Has there ever been a Palestinian official thrown out of his job for ordering an attack on Israeli civilians, or for carrying out the attack themselves? There have been thousands of attacks over the years, and I don't recall a single Palestinian ever being charged or tried by any Palestinian authority or security service for attacking Israeli civilians. You obviously are not very keen. The only solution is for the Palestinians to negotiate, and they refuse.

So who broke Eisner's fingers if it wasn't Ias? Peaceful protest my ass. Let's see the whole unedited video. Why don't the ISM 'activists' go and support the Syrian masses? I'll tell you why. Because they would get shot.

you should meet the families of all the thousands of elderly, women, teens, young children, babies and non-combatants murdered by the zionazis of izrael in cold blood. afterwards, perhaps you could help their relatives find the many still-missing bits and pieces of flesh from exploded body parts? or if you get nauseated by such visions, you simply review international law to learn the countless blatant violations by the IOF.

Julie: This is what Amnesty Intl says about Palestinians: "The patterns of attacks and statements by members and leaders of Palestinian groups indicate that they have no qualms about launching attacks against civilians and that they in fact carry out such attacks intending to kill and injure Israeli civilians. Such attacks constitute war crimes." Can I sit beside you at the war crimes trials you are obviously going to demand?

A murderer often injures himself in the commision of the crime. Eisner probably broke his fingers when attacking the defenseless bicycle rider. I will write my congressman and demand Eisner be punished and not reassigned.

7 ) Carlos / USA - you might not know it, but Eisner is not an American, didn't do anything on American soil nor to an American. You're congressman has no jurisdiction of this. While you are wasting both of your time mention the how law enforcement handled Occupy Wall Street and the other Occupy's around the world last year, happened almost every day for a few months. That should keep you both busy for awhile.
