UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) -- UN chief Ban Ki-moon said Tuesday that he was "deeply troubled" by Israel's decision to grant legal status to three settlement outposts in the occupied West Bank, describing the activity as illegal under international law.

The three outposts -- Bruchin, Sansana and Rechelim -- were built on land Israel declared "state-owned" in the West Bank, an area it captured in the 1967 Middle East war and which Palestinians want as part of a future state.

"The Secretary-General is deeply troubled by the decision of the Government of Israel to formally approve three outposts in the West Bank," Ban's office said in a statement.

"The Secretary-General reiterates that all settlement activity is illegal under international law. It runs contrary to Israel's obligations under the Road Map and repeated Quartet calls for the parties to refrain from provocations," it said.

Israeli officials played down the decision taken by a ministerial committee late Monday and rejected accusations that the government had effectively created the first new settlements for more than 20 years.

The United Nations views all settlements in the West Bank as illegal. However, Israel distinguishes between settlements it has approved and the outposts that were never granted official authorization.

Some 350 settlers live in Bruchin and 240 in Rechelim, both in the northern part of the West Bank, while Sansana, with a population of 240, lies further to the south.

Earlier this month, the so-called Quartet -- the European Union, Russia, the United Nations and the United States -- criticized Israeli settlement building and called on donors to meet aid pledges to the Palestinians as they sought to revive moribund peace talks.

Is the UN so deeply troubled by the killing in Syria? Is Mr Ban so troubled by the torture in my country, Egypt? Is the fact that freedom of expression in Egypt is gone worrying the Security Council? Just a few silly settlements worries the important people in NY, not the people on the Arab street -- and one day this wioll come to bite the UN and Mr Ban.

Making a choice between peace and settle expansion, we choose SETTLEMENT EXPANSION. We DON'T GIVE A DAMN anymore about those STUPID, USELESS "peace" talks (Hamas says to hell with them; Hamas is RIGHT). We don't give a camel's ass what the U.N./international law says. If the U.N. expels us--and yes, we are violating all those U.N. resolutions (242, etc.) and will continue to do so--then SO BE IT !!! So how many of us now live in the W. Bank ??? ... about 500,000 ??? ... GOOD !!! In (cont.)

a matter of years there will be over a MILLION of us and then MORE. I'll be even more direct: If our best and strongest ally, the United States of America, abandons us ... SO BE IT !!! Logically, it IS wrong for the Americans to condemn our settlement building/expansion yet simultaneously fail to veto any Security Council resolution stating so. Are the Americans (and we) continuing to deceive the Palestinians about this 2-nation "solution" ??? ... You're DAMN RIGHT they (and we) ARE !!!

UN resolution ES-9/1 of 1982 (reaffirmed 1985): "Israel's record & actions establish conclusively that it is not a peace loving Member State"...calls for BDS by all member states against israel to: "a) refrain from supplying Israel with any weapons & related equipment & to suspend any military assistance which Israel receives from them b) refrain from acquiring any weapons or military equipment from Israel c) suspend economic, financial & technological assistance to & co-operation with Israel...

Cont...calls To: d) sever diplomatic, trade & cultural relations with Israel 13. Also calls upon all Member States to cease forthwith, individually & collectively, all dealings with Israel in order totally to isolate it in all fields 14. Urges non-member States to act in accordance with the provisions of the present resolution 15. Calls upon all specialized agencies of the UN system & international institutions to conform their relations with Israel to the terms of the present resolution....etc.

If you're so "deeply troubled", UN chief Ban Ki-moon, get off your korean keister and DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

10 ) Priorities / Proportions
25/04/2012 05:11
Just so we're clear, the UN chief has so few important priorities, that NOT even renewed fighting between Sudan & South Sudan has him as "deeply troubled by new outposts" of only - 830 - Jewish "settlers", on their ancestral homeland, between - 7,000,000 - Israeli Jews, and - 2,000,000 - Palestinian Muslims, or a Proportion of - about 0.01 Percent of the Total Population !!! Either the UN chief has more important matters to focus on, or the UN chose their chief very badly !!!

25/04/2012 05:20
Yes? And so what are you and the UN going to do about it? Here is an idea, raze the illegal settlements to the ground, recognize Palestine as a state, and initiate sanctions against Israel for every flagrant international law and apartheid policy they insist on forcing the Palestinians to live under. How's that for a start instead of being "deeply troubled"?

Paul Krugman, Nobel Prize winner & New York Times columnist, wrote in his New York Times blog which was quoted in today's Haaretz: "Like many liberal American Jews I basically avoid thinking about where Israel is going. It seems obvious from here that the narrow-minded policies of the current government are basically a gradual, long-run form of national suicide – and that’s bad for Jews everywhere, not to mention the world.”

12) Israel is heading in the right direction. The Islam controlled UN is no longer relevant. The land in question was either won by Israel during a war perpetrated by its neighbors or abandoned by Jordan. Either way they are entitled to keep it. It was never owned or controlled by the fictitious "Palestine". The notion of a peace agreement that brings that none-entity into reality is a dead duck. The world does not need or want another Arab state. Even the other Arab states don't want it !

Even if you refuse to face facts, 64 years of FACTS REMAIN:
1- ACTIONS like "do something, raze settlements, recognize Palestine, etc."
ARE FANTASY, and
2- WORDS like "deeply troubled, concerned, condemn, etc."
ARE REALITY, and all that Palestinians will get from the Quartet, and
3- If the PA ever expects "Palestine" to become a reality,
then the must do it themselves, through NEGOTIATIONS !!!

#12;Julie: "Like many liberal American Jews I basically avoid thinking about where Israel is going." I would guess that Krugman is VERY aware that Israel is doing EXACTLY what Nazi Germany did,& Israel's "chosen" Zionism is as criminally grotesque as Germany's radical nationalist party of white supremacist Nazis, who put his own Jewish people(among others)in the death camps? German civilians/people ALSO chose to"avoid thinking about where"Germany was "going" too, knowing it was UNFORGIVEABLE!

Cont:Nazi Germany thought it was going in the right exceptionalist direction too, with its xenophobic paranoia& racist/bigotted state-sponsored SOCIOPATHY!The UN is a US-Israeli collaborator,& needs to be DISBANDED &reformed, instead of just being an echo-chamber&enabler,of US-Zionist(Nazi)exceptionalist,colonialism &persecution!ANY UN 'chief',with a conscience, would resign within 6 mths,&blow the whistle on the US-abuse of its appendage(the UN).SHAME ON THE UNGA,for still TOEING a colonial line!

The "Arab Spring" situation in Israel, with only 40 deaths,
is nothing like Syria's situation, with 13,000 deaths, and
any UN staff would have very little to observe, other than:
- a few small outposts may remain,
- the large Israeli settlements will remain,
- Israel's Security Fence & security measures will remain, and
- occaisionally there will be a few rockets fired from Gaza at Israeli civilians,
followed by a few rockets fired from Israel at Islamic extremists/terrorist !!!

@ 12) Julie/USA, Yes, Paul Krugman is what we call a "liberal" Zionist. Believe me, whether they are outside or inside Israel, these "liberal" Zionists are our "enemy" within. "Conservative" Zionists wish they'd just shut the hell up. That's the problem: The "liberal" Zionists, if they get their way, won't just be happy if we withdraw to those pre-damn-Jun., 1967 (pre-Al Naksa) borders. Then they'll say we need to be so democratic that Israel will surely lose its identity. Yeah, right.
