BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Senior Palestinian Authority officers were awarded certificates in diplomatic protocol on Thursday at the presidential compound in Ramallah.

President Mahmoud Abbas' chief of staff Hussein al-Araj, Italian Consul Roberto Storaci and Consul-General Giampaolo Cantini attended the ceremony, the Italian Technical Assistance Unit said in a statement.

Eighteen members of Abbas' office concluded a four-day course at the Muqata on Thursday, led by former deputy head of Italian diplomatic protocol Stefano Starace Janfolla.

The Italian government has funded a series of workshops for PA officers on handling official visits and communication skills, held in Turin and Rome.

Funding for diplomatic PA officers is fine, but Italy's real support and that of other EU memebers for palestinians should be based on their vote against Israeli agression. Most western countries support palestinains by providing funds but they duck when it comes to standing up against Israeli barbaric acts.
