TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- Israel's army has handed control of an abandoned base to the South Hebron Hills regional council, according to a report in an Israeli newspaper Thursday.
Haaretz reported that the base in Adoraim, at one point an army engineering school, had been deserted for several years until the settler council began remodeling the base.
According to the report, Israel's defense minister Ehud Barak approved a request by the regional council in August 2010, awarding it a license to make use of the structure.
The Civil Administration then extended the license until 2016, Haaretz said.
The report quoted leftist activist Dror Etkes as saying the army had essentially authorized a new outpost, while the Defense Ministry said the structure's purpose is now to provide humanitarian aid.
