There are around 14 million landmines in the Sinai peninsula.
EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- An Egyptian soldier was killed by a landmine on Sunday in the Sinai peninsula, a Ma'an correspondent said.

Mahmoud Mustafa, 23, suffered serious blood loss after stepping on the unexploded ordinance, medics said.

Around 14 million land-mines and unexploded ordinances are buried in the Sinai peninsula as a result of Middle East wars, Egyptian daily Al-Ahram said.

During World War Two around 20 million land-mines were planted in Egypt's western desert by European powers.
