JENIN (Ma'an) -- Former Fatah fighter Zakaria Zubeidi was arrested by Palestinian Authority security forces in Jenin on Sunday, his brother said.

Zubeidi, the former leader of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades in Jenin, was intervening in a problem at the local police station when he was seized by security forces, his brother Abed told Ma'an.

The governor of Jenin, Talal Dweikat, told Ma'an that he would neither confirm nor deny the arrest.

Zubeidi's brother was told by the general prosecutor and Dweikat that they didn't have any information about the former Fatah leader's arrest.

Israeli media reported last week that Zubeidi was arrested by PA forces as part of a security crackdown in the northern West Bank city.

Zubeidi confirmed to Ma'an, however, that he was not arrested in the campaign, which saw dozens detained overnight by PA security forces.

Jenin Security Commander Radi Asida said that security services were looking for suspects in a gun attack on the home of late Jenin governor Qaddura Musa, who died from a heart attack on May 2 after the incident.

Zubeidi led the Fatah-affiliated brigades during some of the fiercest fighting of the intifada, or uprising, and was wanted by Israel for many years before authorities granted pardons to hundreds of Fatah militants in 2007.
