Israeli tanks fire on Gaza Strip, 7 injured

Israeli forces opened fire on northern and eastern Gaza, medical officials say.
GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Seven people were injured on Thursday when Israeli forces fired artillery rounds at the northern and eastern Gaza Strip, medics said.

Gaza medical spokesman Adham Abu Salmiya told Ma'an that two people were seriously wounded and five moderately injured when Israeli forces opened fire on Beit Lahiya, north Gaza, and east of Gaza City.

Most of the victims were farmers, Abu Salmiya said.

An Israeli army spokeswoman said forces opened fire toward "several suspects approaching the security fence."

She said no hit was identified.

An Israeli army spokesman later added that "tank shells were fired towards the terrorists," near the Karni crossing east of Gaza City.

Meanwhile, witnesses told Ma'an that Israeli bulldozers entered the Gaza Strip on Thursday east of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

Farmers know better than to "approach the security fence",
so if anyone was hit at all, they were militants.

#1 You know that for a fact do you? Or are you just trying to excuse the actions of a trigger-happy occupation force.

Israeli troops have been known to fire on people as far as 1500m from the fence, So bang goes that 'theory' Tibi. Apart from that it's ludicrous that the Israeli troops (and you) would attempt any justification for shooting people approaching on their own land, a fence/wall also built on their own land. Laughably, the Israelis also often cite their reason for firing as 'stone throwing'. How can you justify shooting someone throwing stones at a wall??

To all, It is tragic that people were hurt but an intense lack of trust and a strong insecurity makes people do senseless things!! "IF" people stopped firing rockets and threatening the existence of one country then the "other country" might reciprocate in kind. At this point in time I believe this kind of behavior is impossible, on both sides. So sad

# 2 if they were trigger happy they would be dead. especially tank rounds.
#4- i challenge you to have people throw stones at you. if you threw stones at a "bobby" would he be wrong to feel threatened and shoot you? or do you expect him to run away from you, cause you only have a rock, and what if its you and 20 of yoru friends throwing those rocks. If you are old enough and stupid enough to throw rocks at someone with a gun, then you deserve whatever is the response

The farmers must have alzheimers disease to not know where their land ends and a military zone begins.

If I threw stones at a policeman I would certainly be arrested, probably charged, probably punished. But I would certainly not be shot. There is NO place in Britain I could expect to be shot for approaching its perimeter fence. I would not be kept in prison without trial, I would not be deprived of visitors, I would be guaranteed proper medical treatment. I would not be placed in solitary confinement.(cont)

(part II) unlike Israeli settlers who daily, are recorded attacking and stoning Palestinian farmers, burning their crops, stealing their land, stealing or wrecking rheir wells, with total impunity. Apparently THESE crimes are considered not worth pursuing by the Israeli authorities, investigations dropped or case papers "lost" in 80-90% of occurrences.

#6 - the excuse this time is "several suspects approaching the security fence" - meaning that the suspects could have been anywhere from 1 to 1000 mtrs away. We appear to have only part of or a different report here. Elsewhere, I read that a car containing several people was being driven "near" to the security fence. Three of the injured were elderly people. BTW the British bobby doesn't shoot at stone-throwers or protesters with live ammo, nor does he run away, the British bobby arrests them!

Tibi, who do you think you are, judge and jury? In that case can you justify the Israeli Occupation Force's bulldozers crossing the border into Gaza...

Israel is effectively reducing the size of Gaza and taking a third of the arable land as a zone of death DMZ for themselves. This cannot be countered until there is effective reconciliation in Gaza and then Gaza can build a wall-barrier like Israel has built in the West Bank to separate Gaza from Israel. This will also require reconciliation with whoever runs Egypt so that aid and trade can flow through Egypt, not Israel.

#5 Abe, I quite agree that people should stop firing rockets, the same people should desist from firing tank shells, rifles, white phosphor shells, and dropping bombs too. Can you *really* not see that Israel is the perpetrator of the violence? Double the number of Palestinians have been killed and ten times the number injured in the last twelve years.

I think reconciliation between Hamas and the PA is extremely unlikely. Latest reports show that (amongst other things) during the ten years from 2001 to 2011, SIXTY FIVE MILLION dollars worth of aid projects carried out by Europe in the West Bank have been destroyed by the Israeli authorities on one excuse or another. All this without a peep from the PA as far as I can see. How would Hamas reconcile with an authority which does such a poor job of representing its people?

#14 ferdirand, We have a disagreement. First of all to me, it is not about keeping score. It is biblical in scope. Both sides believe in an eye for an eye! If you hit me I hit you back harder. You send in a suicide bomber we send in fighter jets. you send in rockets and mortars we send in Tanks. Yes innocent people will be killed or injured on both sides, tragic. But until the 2 sides sit down at a table put aside demands and talk, this endless cycle will continue.

#16 Abe, I agree that the cycle will continue until both sides meet and agree a peaceful settlement. However, if *you* were a Palestinian would you be keen to agree to meet whilst your people are being deprived of water, having their land stolen by the State and settlers, their children arrested, detained and abused. Denied access to certain roads and public transport, not permitted to marry their partner of choice. The list of wrongs suffered by Palestinians is endless.

Ferdirand, I am neither an ISRAELI or a PAL. I just believe that neither side trusts the other. IF you were an ISRAELI and every day your existence was threatened. Every day a group refuses to recognize you. I truly believe it would be hard for you to be magnanimous. ISRAEL gave up the Gaza all they got in return were rockets and mortars. They left Lebanon and all that happened there was a war with Hezbollah. It is truly a shame. It is the fault of BOTH sides.
