VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -- The Vatican said Tuesday that an economic agreement it is negotiating with Israel will not mean the de facto recognition of Israel's annexation of East Jerusalem.

The Vatican was responding to allegations that the deal, which involves tax status and other financial issues concerning Church properties in the Holy Land, would result in a recognition of Israel's control of East Jerusalem.

Palestinians want East Jerusalem to be the capital of an eventual homeland. Israel annexed East Jerusalem in the 1967 war and in 1980 declared the city its "united and eternal" capital. World powers have not recognized the annexation.

"The agreement on which we have been working concerns the life, activities and fiscal regime of the Catholic Church in Israel," said Monsignor Ettore Balestrero, a Vatican diplomat who is negotiating the agreement.

"In the agreement, we wished to steer clear of territorial disputes. We will not speak about East Jerusalem or places in the West Bank," he told Vatican Radio.

Both sides have been negotiating the agreement for years and there is no indication when they will reach an accord.

Since when East Jerusalem or the West Bank are a "territorial dispute"??? This is an occupation! and the Vatican has adopted the same language as the Israelis... as a Palestinian Catholic I feel ashamed of the Holy See.

The world and the Vatican accepts that life in Jerusalem and the West Bank must continue, even if the PA refuses to accept peace with Israel forever !!

O.K. ... O.K. ... I understand this ... so WHAT IS the Catholic Church's fiscal status and regime in Israel ??? ... Actually, I DON'T want any Christian church or Muslim mosque properties taxed in Israel at all. No offense but I'd just greatly appreciate it if those properties were REMOVED from Israel and sent BACK to the Vatican or Armenia or Greece or whatever OTHER country/locatioin that would be appropriate.

The pope has disappointed me so badly. The pope never condemned the murder of 9 civilians on Mavi Marmara. He never condemned the brutal israeli attack on Gaza which killed thousands of civilians. I tried going to a Maronite Catholic Church to let the pope know I support Arab/ Palestinians rights. I could not go to this church with him as pope. I quit being a catholic. I give my monthly church donations to UNESCO and ANERA.

Yehuda Solomon/ israel is a "tolerant israeli" like the ones the Haaretz talks about in;
http://www.haaretz.com/print-edition/news/christians-in-jerusalem-want-jews-to-stop-spitting-on-them-1.137099
So much for a tolerant open society. What a joke israel is! Quite frankly Iran is much more hospitable and open society than israel
.

To Tibi #2 'The world and the Vatican accepts that life in Jerusalem and the West Bank must continue, even if the PA refuses to accept peace with Israel forever !!' How do you feel about 'accepting peace' with someone who has seized your house and keeps you caged in the garage? Whoops...he wants most of the garage as well. Interested in talking about how much of the garage you're to be allowed to keep?

Re Yehuda Solomon #3 'I'd just greatly appreciate it if those properties were REMOVED from Israel and sent BACK to the Vatican or Armenia or Greece or whatever OTHER country/locatioin that would be appropriate.' I thought that cat would come out of the bag sooner or later. However, go for it. Really rub everyone's snout in what Israel is all about. Make even more friends!

To southparkbear #5 '1 undivided city serving as capital of the jewish people' What a ridiculous fantasy! Look where you're posting from. The USA! You're not going to Israel, and neither is any other Jew who has an authentic choice. It's a hobby, not a homeland -- and for that reason, it is doomed.

You know what? If I were Colin Wright, I would definitely stay away from anything that required predictive ability. I mean, 64 years and he is still announcing Israel's imminent doom. He still thinks of Israelis as the little guys of 1948. No army, no money, no oil. Not so anymore! All the pundits see Israel soon becoming a major energy supplier. Colin old boy. The same hypocrites who boot licked the Arabs will soon be boot licking Israelis. Who will be "doomed" then?

Why does the eastern part of a city always become a violent ghetto and slum ?

I do not understand how anyone can still be a catholic, I mean after all they have done? It blows my mind..... apart from the centuries of torture, rape pillage, genocide, piracy etc. The only people who should be catholics are paedophiles, since it provides them perfect cover to molest and rape children. St Peter is their main dude, he represents the materialistic archetype in the jesus story, peter is ancient greek for clod of earth and was used as a mild insult meaning stupid.

12. Good point. London's East end hit rock bottom when the Victorians decided to build a sewage plant that side. In the immortal words of Monty Python. "You can always tell who the peasants are. They are the one's covered in shit."

Popes come and go, Caliphs came and went, but we are still here and not going anywhere. Recognized or not, Jerusalem is ours. It is going to stay ours. If the Arabs dont like it, they can go to Medina. That was once a jewish city called Yathrib, so no complaining please.
