JERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Israel responded on Wednesday to a lack of progress in talks aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear program by demanding that the West impose stiffer economic sanctions on Tehran and hinting anew that a military option was still on the table.

Six world powers and Iran failed to secure a breakthrough at talks in Moscow this week, the third round under the latest diplomatic initiative, and set no date for more political negotiations.

"It is time for the United States and Western powers to impose more severe sanctions in the oil embargo and financial sectors in order to stop Iran's nuclear development program," Vice Prime Minister Shaul Mofaz of the centrist Kadima party said in a statement after talks in Washington with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Mofaz, a former defense minister and military chief, said that in addition to economic steps there was a need "to continue to prepare all other options", an oblique suggestion that a military attack to prevent Iran developing a nuclear weapon remained a possible course of action.

While Western powers suspect Iran of trying to develop the capacity to build a nuclear bomb, Iran says its nuclear program is destined for energy production alone.

Before reports of the Moscow talks breaking up, Mofaz was quoted as telling reporters in Washington that any use of military power "should be the last option, and I believe that this option should be led by the US and the Western countries".

Mofaz heads the largest party in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right-leaning ruling coalition, since the two leaders forged a partnership last month to avoid threats by their opponents to seek an early election.

Western concern that Israel might resort to force has fueled efforts to continue discussions with Tehran.

Technical talks with Iran have been scheduled for July 3 in Istanbul, but no further political talks have been agreed, and some experts have said the risk of war will increase unless diplomacy is renewed.

Israel is widely believed to be the only Middle East country with nuclear weapons.

On his four-day visit to the US capital, Mofaz is also seeking US help in arranging a meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas to try to renew peace talks deadlocked since 2010 over Jewish settlement building in occupied territory.

It is time for world to impose sanctions on israel for nuclear proliferation, human rights abuses, ethnic cleansing. It is actually way past time for this. israel is increasing its threats against peaceful nations. israel has attacked every country it borders repeatedly and without provocation. It has even attacked Tunisia which is really far away and no threat to israel at all ever! israel delights in murdering civilians.

Israel government is irresponsible to even warn Iran of an attack while the Russians are sending more ships and troops to Syria. Does they think that the Russians going to stand idle while Israel is sending their planes to Iran?. I think Israel is to delusional, they need to stick to Gaza and get a quick win out of it, and leave the rest of the area alone unless they come to them.

Note the difference in handling the same problem. This UN Resolution has not been enforced:

United Nations Security Council Resolution 487

June 19, 1981

The Security Council,

Noting furthermore that Israel has not adhered to the non-proliferation Treaty ...calls upon Israel urgently to place its nuclear facilities under IAEA safeguards.

#2 israel could never take Iran over in two weeks. israel might win but it might lose badly too as its supply lines would be stretched to the breaking point. My opinion whoever attacks loses. israel will find itself at the most disliked country on this earth ever if it attacks Iran. Oil prices will go through roof and US will back away from support for israel. Go ahead and attack you idiot.

@ JOE FATTAL USA. israel already tried a quick win in Gaza. It wasnt quick it lasted a month and it did not gain any of its objectives. It did not get the imprisoned israeli or destroy Hamas or gain international support. It lost international support. At this point only the US supports israel. I write my senators and congressmen every week letting them know there are committed people who vote for Palestinian rights. What israel did do is murder 1600 civilians. israel government is a loser.
