DUBAI (Reuters) -- Iranian foreign minister Ali Akbar Salehi urged Turkey and Syria late on Saturday to show restraint following Syria's downing of a Turkish warplane, his ministry said.

In a telephone conversation with Turkish foreign minister Ahmed Davutoglu, Salehi said he hoped the two sides would "settle the issue peacefully to maintain regional stability," read a statement on the Iranian foreign ministry's website.

Iran has supported Syrian president Bashar Assad since anti-government protests erupted across the country early last year and grew into an armed uprising.

Syria shot down a Turkish plane over the Mediterranean on Friday. According to a Syrian military account, the aircraft was flying fast and low, just one kilometer off the Syrian coast when it was hit.

Signals from both sides suggest neither want a military confrontation over the incident and the countries have started a joint search for the missing airmen

Davutoglu shame on U! He knows the plane was fast&below standard radar & inside Syrian SOVEREIGN space!Ankara's stupidly playing both sides?Assisting USG,Israel,Qatar,Riyadh etc,with a SECTARIAN COUP on Syria,using extremist Sunni hired-guns,just to help US/Israel get at Iran,Russia &ultimately China(Eurasian corridor)).Turkey wrong to be arming extremists,to kill Syrian civilians,for a US-COUP to oust a Shiite regime for US-puppet regime,& GET SYRIA(like Iraq)as a US-military base!

To Mel #1. Nobody wants to be left holding the Syrian baby. That's going to be a MESS -- and there's no way out of it that I can see. About the only silver lining I can see in this particular cloud is that if things fall apart fast enough, Israel's going to have other things to do besides pursue her stupid schemes to get the US to attack Iran. Not that her role in Syria will be a happy one -- but at least she'll quit with the Iran nonsense for a while.
