BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) – Gunmen in Jenin shot and injured lawmaker and Fatah leader Shami al-Shami late Saturday, the governor of the northern West Bank district told Ma'an.
Talal Dweikat said al-Shami was hit by two gunshots to his thigh while he was going back home late Saturday. Medics at the public hospital in Jenin said al-Shami sustained moderate wounds.
Slamming the assault, Dweikat said security services were exerting major efforts to try and discover the assailants as soon as possible.
The Fatah bloc in parliament condemned the assault and described it as an attempt to thwart the PA’s efforts to maintain a state of security and stability in Palestine.
“It is an attempt to spread seeds of unrest inside Palestinian society,” the bloc said.
Palestinian security forces have led a security crackdown in the Jenin district after assailants opened fire on the home of Jenin Governor Qaddura Musa in early May.
The governor died of a heart attack the same night.
