GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- An appeals court in the Gaza Strip on Monday convicted four Palestinians of the killing of Italian peace activist Vittori Arrigoni in 2011.

The court sentenced Mahmoud Salfiti, 23, and Tamer Hasasna, 25, to life imprisonment plus 10 years for kidnap and murder, while Khader Ajram, 26, was sentenced to 10 years for abduction.

The three defendants were identified by the Hamas-run court as Hamas security men who had been working for a Salafi group for ideological reasons.

Amer Abu Ghula, a 25-year-old fisherman, fled Gaza after the killing and was sentenced in absentia to 12 months for harboring a fugitive.

The men flashed defiant smiles as the sentences were handed down.

"They will find justice with God and not with this court," a relative of the one of the defendants muttered.

Lawyers said Arrigoni's family had written to the court to oppose imposing the death penalty.

Hamas forces killed two men accused of the murder when clashes erupted during a raid in Nuseirat refugee camp three days after Arrigoni was killed. A third was injured and a fourth detained.

Arrigoni, a long-time member of the International Solidarity Movement, was kidnapped on April 14, 2011.

Shortly after his disappearance, a previously unknown Salafist group released a YouTube video showing a bruised and bloodied Arrigoni and threatened to kill him within 30 hours if Hamas failed to release a group of jihadist prisoners.

Security forces found Arrigoni's body shortly afterward, ahead of the stated deadline, in an abandoned house in northern Gaza.

News of the Italian activist's murder was greeted with widespread condemnation, and demonstrations and vigils were held across the West Bank and Gaza in his memory.

Oh! They'll find "justice" with God alright! Especially for murdering a kind, gentle man who only wanted to HELP,& FREE,the Palestinian people,& make sure Arab Palestine was treated fairly, justly,by the world. That's Salafists who don't want Palestine FREE! Tell me Hamas?Who are more important to ALL Palestine? The global citizens who want a free Palestine(like ISM)?Or radical factions who're loyal only to leaders(incldTel Aviv,Riyadh,Qatar,Cairo,Amman, etc)who DON'T WANT Palestine 2B FREE?

Vittori Arrigoni is a man of justice. He should have been treated by everyone with high respect. This is a huge loss for Palestine and Humanity. I am glad the suspects have been caught.

Imagine if courts in Israel could reach this level. The Hamas government actually convicted Hamas members of killing a foreigner?

#3 No the Israelis always conduct "internal investigations" and find their own loyalists innocent of any wrong-doing. Case in point: the verdict handed down over Rachel Corrie's murder....one of thousands of examples of Israeli and IDF innocence.

I wonder if you lot would be so quick to condemn if the dead man was a Jewish Israeli...

Palestinians have been quick to condemn the murder of Jews. A case in point is the man who ran a theatre group for children in Jenin. He was Jewish and his murder was completely condemned. Hamas acted correctly and apparently with conscience, repect for the victims family and mercy. These are attributes completely missing by israel in treatment of murderers of Rachel Corrie, 8Turks and 1 US citizen killed on Mavi Marmara. It is also missing when israel executes Palestinians without trial.

The cowardly act of killing this gentle human being was sickening & served no one but the enemies of Palestine. Vittorio Arrigoini gave to Palestine more than many Palestinians. The beautiful memories and selfless sacrifices of this Palestinian HERO should NEVER be forgotten. I have a son who will be born any day now, and I have chosen to honor his memory by naming my soon-to-be born son Ahmad-Vittorio in his honor, His story & memory will forever live on. May you rest in Peace my dear brother!
